Toronto Blue Jays trade Daulton Varsho to Astros

The Toronto Blue Jays have made another big move as the MLB Trade Deadline approaches. 

After trading Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs on Sunday and acquiring José Soriano from the LA Angels on Monday morning, the Jays will also be moving on from outfielder Daulton Varsho. 

The Blue Jays have reportedly traded Varsho to the Houston Astros in exchange for starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti and cash considerations.

Varsho's name has been brought up in trade rumours quite a bit this season as the Blue Jays' postseason odds continued to fall. The 30-year-old center fielder was on an expiring contract and is set to become a free agent this offseason. 

Through 99 games with Toronto this season, Varsho picked up seven home runs and 26 RBIs with a .243 batting average. This trade marks the end of a three-year Blue Jays tenure for Varsho after being acquired in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks back in 2022. 

Arrighetti will join a Toronto squad that has been making quite a few changes to its starting rotation. He is currently on the IL with foot nerve irritation and is expected to return to action sometime this month. 

The 26-year-old right-handed pitcher is under team control through the 2029 season. 

Through 17 starts with the Astros this season, Arrighetti has recorded a 7-5 record with a 4.60 ERA while only allowing 68 hits in 88 innings of work. He has, however, walked a total of 50 walks in that same span. 

He will join a Blue Jays starting rotation that currently boasts Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, and Max Scherzer, and the newly acquired Soriano.
