Toronto Blue Jays trade Kevin Gausman to Chicago Cubs

It turns out Kevin Gausman has officially thrown his final pitch in the Toronto Blue Jays uniform.

On Sunday evening, the beloved Blue Jays starting pitcher was traded to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for two prospects, according to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic.

Toronto will receive Cubs prospects, High-A infielder Ty Southisene and Triple-A outfielder Brett Bateman in return for the 35-year-old right-hander, who was in the final season of a five-year $110 million contract with the Blue Jays.

Southisene, 2o, is the 10th-ranked prospect within the Cubs system and is batting .326 in High-A with 20 stolen bases in 24 attempts.

Bateman is a 24-year-old centre fielder ranked 21st on Chicago's prospect list. He's been tearing it up with the Cubs Triple-A affiliate in Iowa this season, currently batting .312 with 20 steals in 23 attempts.

Gausman has a 4.38 earned-run average over 23 starts with Toronto this season, and sat among the top pitchers in the American League in strikeouts, with 127 in 127.1 innings.

Gausman's first start for the Cubs is scheduled for Thursday, against none other than the Blue Jays.

Toronto's trade with Chicago was one of two made with the franchise on Sunday.

Before Gausman was dealt there, the Blue Jays acquired veteran starter Jameson Taillon from the Cubs for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Tallion, who recently played for Canada at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, will likely slot into Toronto's starting rotation to fill the void with Gausman now traded.

The 34-year-old American-Canadian pitcher has had a down year on the hill. He's compiled an earned-run average of 5.92 in 15 starts for the Cubs this season while giving up 25 home runs over just 76 innings pitched.
