Dylan Cease has a special painting spot inside Toronto Blue Jays' ballpark

Blue Jays pitcher Dylan Cease has taken quite a liking to his newest hobby since signing with Toronto last offseason — and so has the city.

On Tuesday, Cease collaborated with the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) for a one-of-a-kind event featuring his own collection inside Canada's biggest art gallery.

To date, Cease has painted more than eight pieces and become a frequent shopper at a Toronto art store. But one of the biggest questions surrounding his new hobby is how he finds time during a 162-game baseball season.

Well, the 30-year-old right-hander only paints when the Blue Jays are at home, and his atelier just happens to be inside the Rogers Centre.

"I have a great setup at the Rogers Centre, actually in the team laundry room," Cease told reporters.

"Once I've thrown my side and done all my work, I'll head in there to kill a couple of hours."

While many sports fans may describe baseball, or pitching, as a form of art, Cease believes there are plenty of differences between the two.

"Art has a lot more freedom to it, as there are limitless possibilities," Cease said.

"Unlike on the mound, I don't have to be perfect on the canvas. I'm just having fun and enjoying it."

The collaboration between the AGO and Cease came about on one of the Blue Jays' off days earlier this season.

Cease typically spends his off days touring museums around the city, and about three months ago, he happened to be recognized by an AGO staff member.

"I think someone here recognized me, and I said, 'Oh, by the way, look at these eight paintings I did.' The project went from there," Cease recalled.

The collaboration quickly turned into a full-blown event, with hundreds of Blue Jays fans lining up hours before the AGO opened on Tuesday to get a glimpse of Cease's artwork. Some fans even drove from Niagara Falls to meet the MLB All-Star.

All proceeds from the AGO x Cease event will go toward the gallery's mission to enrich lives through art and learning.

"It's mind-blowing to see the turnout today. I never thought I would be doing anything remotely close to this," Cease said.
