Buck Martinez blown away by heartwarming moment with Toronto Blue Jays rookie

Buck Martinez had plenty of memorable moments during an emotional day at Rogers Centre on Saturday, but one interaction with a young Toronto Blue Jays player stood out above the rest.

Martinez was inducted into the Blue Jays' new Hall of Excellence before Saturday's game against the Seattle Mariners, becoming the latest franchise legend to receive the honour.

While the ceremony was undoubtedly special for the 77-year-old, it was a brief interaction with 24-year-old Blue Jays outfielder Brett Bateman that Martinez said may have impressed him the most.

"I'm going to tell you something that really impressed me today. Maybe the most impressive thing I saw today," Martinez told reporters.

Martinez explained that he was walking toward the batting cage when he saw the Blue Jays rookie running up the stairs toward him.

The young Blue Jays outfielder then quickly introduced himself to one of the franchise's most beloved members.

"He said, ‘I'm Brett Bateman.' And I said, 'I know who you are,'" Martinez recalled.

Bateman then congratulated Martinez on his induction.

"He goes, 'Congratulations.' He said, 'It's very special what you've done.'

"That blew me away," Martinez said. "He didn't know me from Adam. I've never had any contact with him before. But he took the time to say how much he appreciated what I did."

Martinez was so impressed that he made sure to tell Blue Jays president Paul Beeston and manager John Schneider how appreciative he was.

"I said, 'You've got a special kid right there, to take the time to see an old man and say thank you very much and congratulations.' That was pretty awesome."

Bateman, who joined the Blue Jays at the trade deadline in the deal that sent Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs, has quickly become an important part of Toronto's lineup and outfield. Through 19 games with his new team, he's hitting an impressive .333 with seven RBI.

The 24-year-old has made quite the impression on the field since arriving in Toronto, but his interaction with Martinez shows that there is more to him than just what he does on the field.

For Martinez, who spent decades as a player, manager and broadcaster with the franchise, the quick conversation clearly meant a lot.
