Toronto Blue Jays fans got quite the surprise while visiting Joe Carter's statue
Imagine you're a Toronto Blue Jays fan visiting Joe Carter's new statue outside Rogers Centre.
And then, Carter himself shows up.
That's what happened for a barrage of Jays fans on Friday night as Toronto fought to keep their playoff hopes alive against the Seattle Mariners.
After the Jays spanked Seattle 8-1, fans walking by Carter's statue after the game were surprised by the legend himself.
"This is phenomenal, Carter said when chatting with Fan First Network on Friday night. "I thought I'd come out here and surprise everybody. First time back since the statue went up."
"Thought I'd come out here and take a few pictures, because this is what the fans wanted."
He's not wrong about that.
Dozens of photos surfaced online of fans getting their impromptu meet-and-greet with Carter outside Rogers Centre.
"I can't believe this happened," one fan said.
"THIS IS WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF," another posted.
In one video, chants of "Joe, Joe, Joe" burst out in front of a smiling Carter.
The statue of the Jays' legend was recently erected on July 18.
Carter and Jose Bautista were both at the Jays game on Friday night for Toronto's Hall of Excellence unveiling Saturday at Rogers Centre.
Other Jays players, such as Carlos Delgado, were also on hand.
With the Hall of Excellence unveiling, Buck Martinez will be celebrated before Saturday's afternoon match against the Mariners. Fans were already lining up outside of Rogers Centre early in the day for a chance to snag one of the 15,000 free Buck Martinez bobbleheads.
Carter also had some nice things to say about Martinez as the Hall of Excellence opened up.
"The enthusiasm he had for the game, the way he played the game, managed the game, and being involved for all the years he was in baseball, it's a great honour [being inducted into the Jays' Hall of Excellence]."
Vibes are definitely high this weekend in Toronto, with Carter's presence and the Buck Martinez celebration. Fans at Rogers Centre Saturday can also snag a Buck Martini or a Buck Martinez hot dog.
