Canada's FIFA World Cup heroes are coming back to play in Toronto

If you're missing World Cup soccer, fans in Toronto won't have to wait long to catch another huge international fixture.

Just weeks after the city hosted six FIFA World Cup matches, Canada Soccer has announced that the team will return to Toronto for an international friendly against Chile on Saturday, Sept. 26, at BMO Field.

Canada will then face Peru the following week in Montreal, which will give fans a chance to celebrate the team's historic FIFA World Cup run on home soil.

Head coach Jesse Marsch said the two matches at home are an opportunity to thank Canadian fans.

"The momentum we've created for this sport in the country over the past few months has been incredible," Marsch said in a press release.

"We couldn't have done it without our fans, and these matches are a chance to say thank you and continue to build on what we achieved at the World Cup."

Canada is coming off its best FIFA World Cup performance, reaching the Round of 16 for the first time and earning its first-ever knockout-stage victory.

The accomplishment was impressive considering Canada was without two of its biggest stars for the majority of the tournament.

Ismaël Koné suffered a broken leg during Canada's group-stage win over Qatar and won't return before the fall international window.

Alphonso Davies, on the other hand, was limited to just 16 minutes all tournament after suffering a hamstring injury in May, though he'll likely be back for these September friendlies.

Canada opened its FIFA World Cup campaign in Toronto on June 12, drawing 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina in front of a near sold-out crowd of 43,002.

While BMO Field has now returned to its regular capacity of just over 28,000 after the temporary World Cup seating was removed, the Chile match is still expected to be a hot ticket given the large Chilean community in the GTA.

The match is also between two respectable sides inside the top 50 in FIFA's rankings. Canada currently sits 30th in the world, while Chile is ranked 49th.
