Why are all the Toronto Blue Jays players suddenly wearing more red?

If you've tuned into a Toronto Blue Jays game over the past couple of weeks, you may have noticed a lot more red being worn by the team.

While the Blue Jays have traditionally worn red around Canada Day, this latest trend is no accident, and it appears to be a team superstition that all started inside the clubhouse.

According to Sportsnet's Blue Jays play-by-play announcer Dan Shulman, the trend began following the team's disappointing start to the season. Looking to shake things up, starting pitcher Dylan Cease decided to make a subtle change to his uniform ahead of his May 8 start against the Los Angeles Angels.

Cease wore red cleats, a red glove, red belt, red socks and red sleeves on the mound and pitched one of his best games of the season. The Blue Jays went on to win that game 2-0, with Cease recording 10 strikeouts, and his red look quickly caught on with the rest of the team.

"Jeff Hoffman spilled the beans to us in the clubhouse," Shulman said during Monday night's broadcast. "We didn't really get into whether it's a bonding thing or a superstition thing, but everybody has bought in."

Even George Springer joined the trend, swapping out his signature Kelly green batting gloves, which are a tribute to his favourite childhood hockey team (the Hartford Whalers), for red gloves.

Sportsnet reporter Hazel Mae even joined the trend during Monday night's game against the Miami Marlins, matching the team's new look with her own red outfit.

Hoffman told Shulman that the team and Mae wearing red is a good omen for things to come. Although the red appeared to be an ominous sign for Toronto on Monday night, the team fell 8-2 to the Marlins.

Still, since Cease and the team have been rocking the red, the Blue Jays have posted a 9-8 record — so maybe it's helping after all. We personally think the red should be a permanent thing, considering Toronto remains Canada's lone MLB team.
