Perhaps 'Mad' Max Scherzer's chapter with the Toronto Blue Jays hasn't concluded just yet.
The 41-year-old, who spent the 2025 season with the Blue Jays, remains available on the free-agent market despite spring training recently getting underway.
The Blue Jays were reportedly considering bringing Scherzer back after a strong showing in the 2025 postseason. That possibility seemed unlikely, however, after the signings of both Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce.
Despite the two additions to their rotation, however, the Jays, who will be without Shane Bieber to begin the season, are once again looking to add some more depth. And, based on a new report from Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith, Scherzer may be their top target.
"While nothing is finalized, the Blue Jays' talks with Max Scherzer have gotten more serious in the last week per industry sources," Nicholson-Smith wrote on X.
"Other clubs in the mix but Blue Jays appear to be his most serious pursuer on a possible one-year deal," added Nicholson-Smith.

Other clubs in mix but Blue Jays now appear to be his most serious pursuer on a possible one-year deal. More @Sportsnet soon.
While Scherzer did impress in the playoffs, his regular season wasn't anything to write home about. Injuries limited him to just 85 innings, where he posted a disappointing 5.19 ERA.
Should Scherzer come back to the Blue Jays, it wouldn't be surprising to see him work as more of a reliever while potentially filling in for spot starts when needed.
Either way, seeing the three-time Cy Young winner, once dubbed "the biggest psychopath in sports," return to Toronto is news that would make Blue Jays fans very happy.
