Veteran pitcher has message for Toronto Blue Jays after rubber controversy

The Toronto Blue Jays have taken a beating this season.

They've suffered injuries throughout the lineup. Their best player can't hit home runs anymore. World Series hopes have dissipated, leading to a trade deadline selloff.

Now, they've been dissed by one of the most veteran pitchers in baseball.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler took a shot at the Blue Jays following Friday night's 5-4 win for Toronto.

During the contest, Blue Jays hitting coach David Popkins got tossed from the game for yelling at Wheeler to keep his foot on the rubber of the pitching mound.

Earlier in the season, the Phillies pitcher had been flagged for completely removing his foot from the rubber, something that would give him a slight advantage when pitching. 

However, the Phillies clapped back, claiming it was all a misunderstanding.

“Our guys have looked at it and had conversations with MLB, basically talking about how the angle of our center-field camera makes it look like he's off, but when they show the overhead [angle], he's on," Phillies manager Don Mattingly said postgame.

The Phillies manager wasn't the only one to sound off about the controversy.

“I've been pitching over there forever, and I'm gonna keep doing it,” Wheeler said after the game.

 “[The Blue Jays] have lost a lot of games over there, so they're probably trying to pick some things up to complain about.”

Ouch.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider did try to clarify the kerfuffle postgame. 

"I have all the respect in the world for [Zack Wheeler]," Schneider said. "We were just getting information that his foot was off the rubber on the first-base side. … It’s hard to see in real time."

"It was just an example of our hitting coach protecting the players and me doing the same."

The Blue Jays are 3.5 games back of the Texas Rangers for the final Wild Card spot in the AL. They would currently have to leapfrog six teams to qualify for postseason baseball.
