You may think you've seen all the province has to offer, but an amazing set of Ontario caves may be a reminder to always look beyond the surface.
Tyendinaga Cavern & Caves is located just a two-hour drive east of Toronto, between Belleville and Napanee on Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, the traditional homeland of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte.
This family-owned property has been welcoming visitors for over 30 years. It's the largest natural cave system in Canada, and you can even tour the inside of its oldest cavern.
Visitors can see cool features such as rugged limestone walls and stone staircases etched into the caves. Plus, you'll learn about ancient fossils, the history of the Bay of Quinte and the Tyendinaga area and the preservation of the site.
The caves have existed there for thousands of years and were transformed into a tourist site by husband-and-wife duo Charles and Elizabeth Koch. They took their labour of love and turned it into an underground adventure they could share with the masses.
Guided tours last 45 minutes, beginning above ground before visitors are escorted down a staircase to the entrance of the caves. There's a brief moment of darkness before the main cavern is lit up.
There are also side passages to explore, and a wishing well with bright blue water — so be sure to bring a coin or two if you'd like to make a wish.
Bonus tip: This place might even be as good as visiting your local swimming pool this summer. Average temperatures in the cavern can reach 10 degrees C. Consider bringing a light sweater along as it can get chilly.
If you want to stay longer, there's even a great view from the lookout area. The town of Belleville is also a 15-minute drive from the caves, making it an excellent option for a full-day trip.
If you want to have an adventure this summer, look no further than this epic cave spot.
Tours can be booked online and are $16 for adults. Visiting season starts in May and lasts until Thanksgiving.
