Tutto Panino
Tutto Panino is an Italian-inspired sandwich shop co-owned by a Grammy-nominated musician.
Charlotte Day Wilson grew up in Toronto's east end, and though the singer-songwriter spent much of her adult life in Halifax (and several formative years in Montreal), she still considers the 416 her home.
Paul Liliani has been friends with Charlotte since middle school, and when Charlotte approached him with an idea for a restaurant, he was immediately on board.
The duo quickly became a quartet after sharing their plans with some mutual friends. Andi Larocca, a real estate agent, and Kaitlyn Lasagna, a chef, joined the team, intent on helping the others get the business off the ground.
After taking some time to fine-tune their idea, the group debuted Tutto Panino at a pop-up event in 2024. The event, which was held at Burdock Brewery in Kensington Market, drew a significant crowd, allowing many visitors to get their first taste of the team's creations.
Once it became clear that their sandwiches had an audience, Charlotte and company set to work locating a permanent storefront. This came in the form of a cozy corner unit at the intersection of Pearson and Sorauren Avenues.
The space was previously occupied by Mitzi's Cafe, a popular all-day brunch spot. Despite its small size, Tutto Panino is packed with personality.
Stained glass lamps hang above a walk-up counter. Vinyls are displayed on the hanging shelves, and wood-panelled speakers blast music from an ever-changing playlist.
A small patio surrounds the entryway, providing seating for those who want to eat their sandwiches at a more leisurely pace.
With the exception of a few Italian-inspired desserts, Tutto Panino's menu consists entirely of simple but satisfying cold cuts. Considering that the restaurant's name roughly translates to "all sandwiches", this makes perfect sense.
"We're not trying to reinvent the wheel here," Andi tells us with a laugh.
The Bollito sandwich ($13) is one of Tutto Panino's signature dishes. Made with stewed beef brisket and salsa verde, this savoury sandwich has been around since the team's very first pop-up.
The Cacio E Pepe sandwich ($14) is a slightly more recent addition, made with coppa, iceberg lettuce and cacio e pepe aioli. Its creamy, peppery flavour was one of the highlights of the menu.
The Mortadella sandwich ($13) is an elevated take on a classic cold cut. In addition to the meat that gives the dish its name, this sandwich contains whipped ricotta, pepperoncini and Sicilian green olives, which enhance its savoury flavour.
The Tomato Fresca sandwich ($14) is one of Tutto Panino's vegetarian options, filled with fresh tomatoes, whipped ricotta, pickled red onion, Sicilian pesto and arugula.
Since the sandwich is made with local ingredients, it's only available from June to September, when tomatoes are in season.
Cannolis ($3.50) are tiny, tube-shaped pastries filled with chocolate chips and ricotta cheese. Other ingredients vary by season.
Tiramisu ($6) are huge slabs of cake, made with espresso-soaked ladyfingers, amaro and mascarpone cream.
Kaitlyn jokes that most of their customers "come for Charlotte and stay for the tiramisu," a sentiment which I myself shared.
Though having a famous artist on staff is a sure-fire way to generate interest in your business, Tutto Panino is more than just a vehicle for its owner's music career: it's a heartfelt ode to the places and people that shaped it.
Tutto Panino is located at 100 Sorauren Avenue.
