Kela Greek Frozen Yogurt

Kela Greek Frozen Yogurt is keeping Toronto stocked with fresh frozen treats all summer long.

Located on St. Clair West, Kela specializes in Greek-style frozen yogurt, topped with fresh fruit, chopped nuts and other wholesome ingredients.

Owners Kerem Karaca and Laura Delaossa (whose names were combined to create the business's name) were inspired to open their own yogurt shop after travelling to Greece together.

kela greek frozen yogurtAmazed by the quality of Greek desserts and surprised by their lack of presence in North America, the couple made it their mission to bring Greek-style frozen yogurt to Toronto.

Kerem explains that Greek yogurt's unique flavour makes it an ideal summer snack: it’s not too sweet, not too tart, and pairs well with a variety of different toppings.

Laura adds that while a few other restaurants have started to sell Greek yogurt, Kela is the only shop in the city that exclusively carries it.

Cobblestone tiles cover the floor, while pottery is displayed in niches on the walls. A long counter takes up the majority of the shop, with labelled bowls of toppings drawing customers in for a closer look.kela greek frozen yogurtAll of Kela's ingredients are purchased from local Ontario businesses. Additionally, the shop's yogurt is made in-house, ensuring that the owners have complete control over the quality of their products.kela greek frozen yogurtMini scoops ($7.99) come in tiny white cups, emblazoned with the business's logo. Due to their small size, mini scoops come with only a single topping. However, additional toppings can be purchased for a small fee.

We opted for a combination of chocolate, strawberries and pistachios, which formed a deliciously crunchy shell around the thick, creamy yogurt. kela greek frozen yogurtClassic scoops ($9.99) are almost double the size of the mini scoop with twice as many toppings.

For this order, we went with a mix of chopped pistachios, whole cherries and honey. Unlike the previous combination, which was rich and indulgent, this mix of toppings felt light and refreshing.

In particular, the sweetness of the honey offset the tartness of the cherries quite nicely.

kela greek frozen yogurtCones ($5.99) are longer and thinner than your average sugar cone, with a crispy texture that complements the yogurt perfectly.

For this dish, we decided to keep things simple with a light drizzle of pistachio cream. The result was a cool, refreshing dessert with a hint of nutty sweetness. kela greek frozen yogurt

Iced lattes ($5.75) are made with Colombian coffee and your choice of milk. Options include whole milk, 2%, 0%, oat milk and almond milk, the latter of which costs fifty cents extra.

You can also punch up your drink with a shot of caramel or vanilla. Sugar-free syrups are available upon request.
