Kensington Tavern

Kensington Tavern may very well be the only place in Toronto where you can enjoy the perfectly complementary (and somewhat unexpected) harmony of a melt-in-your-mouth steak and a litre stein of local craft beer, all in a charmingly homey space brimming with Canadiana.

It's the latest — and possibly greatest — project from Bloordale stalwart Burdock Brewery, which expanded with a second beer-making facility and bottle shop on Kensington's Denison Square in 2023 before eventually taking over the restaurant space next door for this new tavern last spring.

The expansive corner unit and its iconic wraparound patio had long been home to Amadeu's Restaurant, the family-owned Portuguese spot that shuttered at the beginning of 2025, leaving the prime space vacant for the first time in 36 years.

While the closure may have seemed abrupt to the public, Amadeu's owners had already been in talks with their new-ish neighbours at Burdock about the future of the property well before they retired.

kensington tavern toronto"They approached us and let us know that we might be a good fit to be the next stewards of that space," Burdock co-owner Matthew Park told us last year, calling the location a "landmark" of the neighbourhood.

He also acknowledged that the team had huge shoes to fill. But for what it's worth, we think they've done a fantastic job of honouring what lived before them with something completely new and equally excellent.

kensington tavern torontoThe initial Kensington Tavern menu, which debuted just in time for patio season '25 after a quick renovation of the space, paid homage to the former owners with some Portuguese-inspired dishes made from quality meat and produce.

Now, months after that initial opening, Kensington Tavern has really come into its own with a refined identity and menu that takes things in a different direction that is very close to the kitchen team's heart: steaks and associated accoutrements.

"We just love steaks. Steaks are back!" Park jokes. "We've got a really beautiful beef supplier of really high-quality, good-value beef. And our chef, Tom, and his sous chef have a ton of experience cooking steaks, so it's something they wanted to do as well."

kensington tavern torontoThe options of what to sink your teeth into are enough to please any carne connoisseur, from a 7oz Flat Iron ($32) and a 12oz New York Strip ($59) to a 24oz Ribeye ($110), cooked to perfection, however you order them.

There's also the Steak Frites ($38 for 7oz), Cheeseburger ($26 with fries), Pork Chop ($41 for 16oz), or, if you're only feeling peckish, Steak Bites ($18).

kensington tavern torontoIf you prefer something outside the realm of red meat, you can always opt for the Mushroom Pappardelle ($24), Rainbow Trout ($36), or the Chicken Platter ($35) that has remained a staple since opening.

Complements include a Caesar Salad or Waldorf Wedge, both of which can serve as a plate for one or a shareable dish, along with a slew of vegetable (and vegetarian-friendly) sides, plus appetizers like the Mushroom Dip ($18), Chicken Wings ($18), Steakhouse Nachos ($22), Shrimp Cocktail ($20), and more.

kensington tavern torontoThen there is, of course, the beer.

Oktoberfest comes year-round here, with almost comically colossal 1 L steins of draft always available, along with the standard 0.3 L and 0.5 L pours of ales, pilsners, sours, and lagers expertly brewed just next door.

kensington tavern toronto"We'd never really heard of a brewery being a steakhouse. It's such a good combination," Park tells us upon our visit just shortly after the rollout of the new menu.

"They pair surprisingly well. People often think of wine and steak as the perfect pairing because, yes, wine complements steak. But beer is like a performance-enhancing drug — it just makes the meat taste more intense and really makes things shine."

kensington tavern torontoWhat also makes the food here shine is the ambiance, with the cottagey knick-knacks and country landscape paintings that line the walls, all hand-sourced by Park over multiple thrift excursions.

kensington tavernThe vibe is decidedly "warm, old-timey steakhouse" — evocative of the famed and historical Barbarian's, in a way — which makes it perfect for losing track of time in conversation with loved ones over some succulent beef and invigorating beer during the colder months.

"We're really happy with where it is. We're ready for winter and for people to come in and nest," Park says of the overall experience of Kensington Tavern, which we agree is one patrons will especially appreciate this season, but also anytime of year, whether in the cozy dining room for dinner, the bar area for drinks, or the killer patio for all of the above (plus some fantastic people-watching).
