Casa Morales

Casa Morales is a modern Mexican restaurant from the team behind Gus Tacos in the heart of Kensington Market.

A departure from the traditional Mexican fare of the fast-casual chain, Casa Morales aims to showcase regional dishes and dynamic flavours through a refined, elevated sit-down dinner experience that goes beyond the usual tacos and quesadillas.

There's creamy roasted poblano soup, spicy shrimp aguachile, saucy red mole chicken, and even family-style barbacoa.

Casa Morales TorontoHeading the kitchen is Chef Felipe Kwon, a longtime friend of owner Augustine Morales. Kwon frequented the Morales family's first humble taco stall to practice his Spanish, making this new venture just steps away from where it all began; a full-circle moment.

With 15 years of experience cooking across the city, Kwon has worked in everything from late-night snack bars to fine dining establishments, with names like El Rey Mezcal Bar, Alma, and Bar Isabel in his repertoire.

For him, Casa Morales brings Mexican gastronomy to life through playful, modern dishes that explore flavour and texture in unexpected ways.

Casa Morales TorontoThe sleek, upscale space features an open-concept kitchen, an expansive bar, warmly lit fixtures, and cushioned black seating. No matter where you dine, you'll catch the smell of fresh corn tortillas hitting the hot grill and the sound of house-made cocktails being melodiously hand-shaken and stirred.

Casa Morales TorontoDark and moody, there's a nod to its roots with concrete square tiles featuring a classic Mexican floral design, a pattern found everywhere, from laundromats to abuela's house.

The punchy and vibrant drink menu offers a selection of mezcal- and tequila-based cocktails, fruit-forward mocktails, Mexican soft drinks, and cold beers.

Casa Morales TorontoThe Bendito Dios ($19) blends mezcal, pineapple, lime and agave for a bright, slightly smoky finish and is served with a Tajín rim.

Casa Morales TorontoThe jewel-toned Hibiscus Margarita ($18) is made with tequila, lime, and hibiscus syrup. It's tart with a sweet and floral finish.

Casa Morales TorontoThe Rosita ($14) is a special mocktail made tableside with a base of house-made raspberry jam.

When it comes to the food, one of Kwon's favourite aspects of Mexican cuisine is its emphasis on freshness.

"We're gathering the vegetables, we're processing the meat and making everything from scratch, including our bread, cheeses, and sauces," he said.

Casa Morales TorontoThe Watercress Salad ($19) highlights jicama, a Mexican root vegetable with a mildly sweet flavour similar to turnip. It pairs beautifully with fresh watercress and the saltiness of house-made queso fresco.

Casa Morales TorontoDesigned with Canadian winters in mind, the Crema Poblana ($21) is a creamy roasted poblano pepper soup served in a nostalgic bread bowl. It's finished with white corn and queso fresco.

Casa Morales TorontoThe Sopes De Hongos ($19) offer a modern approach to the classic masa-fried street food. Often served with refried beans and cheese, Kwon's version swaps the beans for a creamy, umami-rich mushroom duxelle. Each sope is also topped with sliced avocado, pickled oyster mushrooms, queso fresco, and a Serrano chili. Savoury, acidic, and with a touch of heat, this dish was one of my favourites.

Casa Morales TorontoThe Shrimp Aguachile ($29) is similar to a ceviche, featuring plump, freshly filleted shrimp swimming in a beautifully spiced chili water. It's inspired by recado negro, a spice blend from Mexico's Yucatán region.

"There, they will char the chilis until blackened and bitter. We've actually dialled that down here so the chilis retain a bit of their sweetness," Kwon explained.

Though spicy, the dish is also surprisingly bright and citrusy, thanks to plenty of fresh lime juice.

Casa Morales TorontoThe Barbacoa ($62) is a generous platter of slow-cooked lamb shank, served with warm homemade tortillas for building the ultimate savoury tacos.

"Barbacoa is something that you would cook as a community, usually in these community pits where they put tons of lamb in a pit underground for hours, and then people would come and buy kilos and kilos of it to take home," Kwon shared.

Casa Morales TorontoWhile more modestly prepared here, the lamb is seasoned with chili, onion, and agave leaves, then cooked until fall-off-the-bone tender. As a subtle nod to Kensington's Chinatown, each shank gets wrapped in a lotus leaf before being steamed and served.

The dish is complete with equally as flavourful chickpeas and potatoes, sauteed white onion, and chopped cilantro. If you're dining with a group, this is a must-order.

Casa Morales TorontoNamed after the Morales family, Casa Morales introduces something fresh to Toronto's Mexican food scene.

"Our menu reads as traditionally Mexican, but when you get the plate and see the colours and taste the flavours, you'll really see the more international touches that go beyond what's typically expected with Mexican cuisine." Kwon shared.
