Toronto's biggest tourist attraction hosting three-day festival next month

Toronto's Sankofa Square will host its first-ever SankofaFest next month, providing a platform for African diasporic creativity, remembrance, and celebration.

The initial idea began as a powerful one-day cultural gathering in 2025, and now it's transforming into a three-day celebration this August.

According to organizers, the festival is anchored around Aug. 23, 2026, UNESCO's International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. It's also recognized globally as Sankofa Day.

"Last year's Sankofa Day showed us the power of creating intentional space for remembrance, celebration, and community in the heart of Toronto," said Marnie Grona, interim general manager of Sankofa Square. "The response was extraordinary. Expanding into a three-day festival allows us to build on that momentum and create even more opportunities for cultural connection, creative expression, and collective reflection."

During the three days, visitors can expect a gathering full of fashion, music, film, art, sports, and community programming.

Here's the festival breakdown:

Friday, Aug. 21

  • A day full of fashion, culture, and commerce. Sankofa Square will host a vibrant marketplace featuring curated vendors, food experiences, live DJs, interactive activations, and a major runway presentation as part of African Fashion Week Toronto.

Saturday, Aug. 22

  • Concert and nightlife experience will take over, featuring exciting names across Afrobeat, dancehall, and global Black music culture.

Sunday, Aug. 23

  • The final day centres on community access, youth, and creative expression, according to organizers. Think storytelling, film, and art!

SankofaFest will continue its mission under the theme "Looking Back, Building Forward," which honours ancestral memory while creating new pathways for future generations.

SankofaFest will run Friday, Aug. 21, from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, Aug 22, from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday, Aug 23, from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Sankofa Square is located at 1 Dundas St E.
