Much-anticipated Toronto food festival cancelled just weeks before event

A brand-new food festival, Taste of Little Jamaica, celebrating Toronto's Caribbean community, has officially been cancelled.

On July 2, organizers released a statement on Instagram saying the decision to scrap the event, just two weeks before it was set to take over Eglinton Avenue West on July 18, followed months of close work with the City of Toronto and community partners.

"While every effort was made to move the event forward, we were ultimately unable to secure all of the approvals required to proceed this year," the statement reads.

Expected to showcase the culture, cuisine, and community of Little Jamaica, the inaugural Taste of Little Jamaica was highly anticipated by neighbours and resident from afar.

Back in 2025, Little Jamaica Festival, a similar two-day event hosted by the Little Jamaica BIA, was one of the many in a string of event cancellations. Organizers cited funding and permit issues as the primary reasons behind the cancellation.

This year's Taste of Little Jamaica, an amalgamation of Taste the Caribbean and Toronto Patty Fest, was expected to revive cultural celebrations in the historic neighbourhood, but it unfortunately met a similar fate.

Organizers say they are "deeply disappointed" by the outcome but respect the City's permitting process and thank everyone involved in trying to bring the event to life.

Comments expressing frustration and support are flooding the organizers' Instagram post, with people calling the cancellation "unfair" and "suspicious." But community members are promising to support the neighbourhood's small businesses through other means, with some even suggesting a food crawl.

Despite this year's cancellation, the team says Taste of Little Jamaia is not over for good.

"While this year's event will not move forward as planned, our commitment to celebrating and uplifting the Little Jamaica community remains strong," the statement continues. "We look forward to bringing this vision to life in 2027."
