Here's how this Toronto vendor market feels about the Phoenix Concert Theatre moving in

When news broke that Toronto Phoenix Concert Theatre would be relocating to Parkdale Hall, it raised a big question: what will happen to the Toronto Sunday Market?

The Toronto Sunday Market has been hosting its market year-round every Sunday since 2020; a space for guests to discover vintage finds, homemade crafts and pastries from local vendors. Even with the news of Phoenix Concert Theatre's proposal, organizers don't plan on doing any less any time soon.

Alex Chan, the organizer of Toronto Sunday Market and Parkdale Hall, confirms the market will be running straight through 2027, the expected start time for The Phoenix Project's commencement.

"The market has been running at Parkdale Hall since 2020, and for a lot of our vendors it's the one reliable date in their month," Chan tells blogTO.

Chan is quick to assure that, as of right now, the possible addition of the Phoenix Concert Theatre should cause no harm to the continued operations of the Toronto Sunday Market.

2024 was a tough year for Indie music lovers as Toronto Phoenix Concert Theatre announced it was set to close its doors in January 2025 to make room for developers; three months before closing, the venue was able to strike a deal to continue operations for two more years.

Fast forward, and the venue announced future plans to call Parkdale Hall its new home.

With the impending move of The Phoenix Concert Theatre, Chan is the first to acknowledge that neither she nor anyone involved with Parkdale Hall is opposed to the venue moving in, but the plan warrants a strategy for coexistence with the already established residents.

Currently, the Phoenix project is an application before the city. Chan specifies that a proposal does not equal approval. If approved, construction would be a long way off; Chan notes that the only action being taken at the moment is for operations to carry on as usual.

"The Toronto Sunday Market is continuing, and it's continuing at Parkdale Hall," Chan tells blogTO. "My intention is for the market to remain part of this building's future. Bringing a 1920 theatre back to life only matters if the community can still get through the door.”

You can catch the Toronto Sunday Market at Parkdale Hall, located at 1605 Queen St., every Sunday.
