How thrifting went from a trend to a lifestyle for Toronto shoppers

The last decade or so has seen a dramatic increase in the thrifting industry in Toronto.

What used to be a casual afternoon stop has become something closer to a near-holy-grail pilgrimage, with routine visits for thousands of weekly shoppers. If there’s one thing that’s true about the city, it’s that thrift shopping is a way of life here.

A closer look at the crowds filling secondhand shops across the city helps paint a clear picture of why thrifting continues to thrive, with many shoppers reporting Value Village as their go-to destination.

The thrill of the (treasure) hunt

Perhaps one of the most common reasons why thrifting is so popular is what some shoppers call the thrill of the hunt. Flipping through clothing racks or browsing home décor shelves offers the chance to uncover a one-of-a-kind find or a great everyday piece.

That element of surprise is exactly what keeps many thrifters coming back, including Toronto-based content creator Zach Sheppard.

"It feels a bit like treasure hunting – you never know what great pieces you'll find," he says. Some of his favourite outfits have come from secondhand finds, and he loves the idea of giving pre-loved clothing a second life.

A great find is its own dopamine hit. Just ask a thrifter what their biggest score was, and you'll be met with an unbridled amount of giddiness.

The perfect boyfriend shirt, a vintage mirror, or even a mid-century modern coffee table, you name it — if it's been thrifted at Value Village, you know it was scooped up with a smile.

And since a typical Value Village store in Canada merchandises around 34,000 unique items a week, there are always new hunting adventures to have.

Fashion central

Toronto fashion baddies don't play around when it comes to their styles and outfits, and they'll tell you the secret to any good outfit is the thrift store.

Clothing is among the most purchased items from Value Village, and that comes with a whole side of fashion. From vintage pieces, unique designs, quality basics, and an array of sizing, styling an outfit from Value Village guarantees a unique #OOTD.

For content creator Helen Tu, thrifting has played a major role in shaping her personal style.

"I've been an avid thrifter for over 10 years, and what first sparked my love for thrifting was the thrill of finding pieces no one else has," she says. "Discovering those one-of-a-kind gems really helped shape my personal style. Thrifting challenges you to trust your own taste and find pieces that truly reflect your personality."

It's about individuality and self-expression, and thrift stores like Value Village are one of the last-standing retailers that still offer a chance for this.

A familiar and lasting tradition

Digital creator Christiana Webster says that her connection to thrifting started early.

"My love of thrifting started back when I was a kid, when my mom used to take me to our local Value Village to look for gems together," she tells blogTO.

"That love followed me into adulthood, and now thrifting is truly a part of my identity. It gives me the freedom to express myself through my style, build my dream wardrobe without breaking the bank, and of course, continue connecting with my community through our mutual love of the hunt."

Value Village: A global thrifting haven
