Toronto's Aki Donburi sat loud and proud on the edge of the Annex border for three years, but after a short and sweet stint serving smiles and delicious Japanese rice-bowl dishes, the restaurant has said goodbye with only 24 hours' notice.
Donburi is a Japanese rice bowl dish that consists of steamed white rice topped with a variety of protein and veggies, creating the perfect combination for a warm and comforting meal. Aki Donburi did donburi perfectly, always serving them with joy and excitement, and at a speed you wouldn't expect from such a quaint spot.
Situated conveniently outside Bathurst Station on the south-east corner of Bloor and Bathurst, it was the popular stop to make when in the area. Small and minimal but boasting an explosion of flavours, people were sad to see it go.
Taking to Instagram on Nov. 1, Aki Donburi announced the restaurant's closing, giving fans only a day's notice to change dinner plans and get a final bowl before the doors shut for good.
"After three memorable years, Aki Donburi will be closing its doors on November 2, 2026, writes Aki Donburi in the post. "To everyone who has been part of our journey, thank you for your kindness, encouragement, and all the memories we've shared."
Keeping true to the tight-knit community the team has created, loyal customers took to the comments to express their gratitude to the restaurant and their shock at the sudden closure.
"What?!? No! Your food is amazing," one fan writes.
Another says they've "never been more devastated."
One commenter claims they had eaten over 100 of Aki Donburi's bowls. Is this true? I'm not sure, but if it is, I'm impressed.
Aki Donburi was, in my opinion, a hidden gem that Toronto had yet to understand. Although potentially undiscovered, it was a favourite spot to many, making the news of its closing all the more painful.
Aki Donburi officially closed on November 2.
