A neighbourhood sushi spot in Toronto has suddenly closed up shop, leaving behind only a simple note on its storefront thanking customers for their support over the years.
TOBIKO Express, located on Roncesvalles Avenue, has permanently closed its doors, according to a notice posted on its door and shared to a community Facebook page.
"We regret to inform you that our store is now permanently closed. Thank you very much for your support and patronage over the years. We sincerely appreciate all of our customers and wish you all the best," the note reads.
The post garnered several heartbroken reactions from regulars, with one writing, "I think maintaining a small business like that with the overhead on food these days must be tough."
The takeout spot was a convenient option for locals looking to grab sushi on the go, with pre-packaged meals and a menu full of classics like sushi and maki sets, specialty rolls, udon, and party platters.
It's unclear exactly when the restaurant closed its doors, but the space is already being advertised for sale as a Japanese takeout restaurant.
The listing describes the space as a potential opportunity for a new owner, and highlights its "low food cost” and "simple, easy-to-learn menu." While listed for $68,000, the TOBIKO Express name and brand aren't included in the sale.
The good news for Roncesvalles residents is that there's no shortage of other places to get their sashimi fix, with spots like Sake Sushi, Sushi On Roncy, and Kami Sushi still serving the neighbourhood.
blogTO has reached out to the restaurant to confirm the reasoning behind its sudden closure.
TOBIKO Express was located at 67 Roncesvalles Ave.
