A popular Ontario bakery, known for its South Asian inspired treats, just announced major menu changes, a decision that came as a rude awakening for many loyal customers and may mark the end of its long-standing through-the-door lines.
Rashmi's Bakery, a 100% egg- and nut-free baked goods confection shop, took to Instagram on Oct. 28 to announce that it has discontinued all its gluten-free and vegan products.
The dessert shop, which has served the Greater Toronto Area for the past 19 years and is home to a viral Rabri Gulab-Jamun Pastry, says it wants to focus on its specialty eggless and nut-free cakes and pastries, giving its "bakers more room to create."
The announcement has since sparked an outpouring of disappointment in the comments section. "That's super disappointing, and I was one of your early vegan customers," a regular patron commented.
One bride-to-be also weighed in, revealing that she was excited to celebrate her big day with a wedding cake from the bakery. "Heartbreaking news. My fiancé and I were so looking forward to ordering our wedding cake from you next year," she wrote, explaining that her fiancé has both nut and dairy allergies and that Rashmi's Bakery has been his family's go-to for years.
Several other customers also pointed to the decision as part of a bigger problem facing the vegan community: the increasingly limited selection of vegan cakes and pastries.
"It just seems like another hit to the vegan community, and we've been experiencing so many lately with the closing of the fully vegan restaurants and then vegan-friendly businesses dropping their vegan options. It's like the new trend, and it hurts."
More than anything, however, much of the disappointment appears to stem from a feeling of betrayal, with customers questioning why a business would move away from a customer base that has supported it for years.
Given that Rashmi's Bakery built its reputation around catering to people with dietary restrictions, including those seeking egg- and nut-free options and those with celiac disease, its latest business move has left some wondering whether the bakery is moving away from the inclusive approach that helped define it.
"Crazy to ditch the customers that brought you consistent business in the first place," another disheartened regular wrote.
For now, it remains to be seen whether Rashmi's Bakery will respond to the ongoing backlash and consider bringing back even a fraction of its gluten-free and vegan offerings. The team was unavailable to comment at the time of publication.
Rashmi's Bakery serves the GTA from two locations: 110 Pertose Dr. in Brampton and 3611 Mavis Rd. in Mississauga.
