Caterer fires back after Toronto customer alleges they were duped by AI

A Toronto resident claimed their catering order arrived looking nothing like the photo they were promised and alleges that the business used AI to mislead them.

Reddit user @sosaxo shared a disappointing experience on the subreddit 'r/ExpectationvsReality' claiming to have fallen victim to what they characterize as misleading advertising from Toronto caterer Gloria Catering.

"Ordered charcuterie cups for a work event from a Toronto event caterer and this is what I got...", captions the Reddit user, along with photos of the expectation and the reality of what they say they received.

With over 700 comments and 8.2k upvotes as of writing, the conversation sparked by the original poster's accusations against the catering company has ignited broader debates.

What I ordered vs what I got…

There's much to consider here. The AI-generated advertisement displays a complete cup garnished with meats, cheese, nuts, berries, and high-quality crackers. What was advertised clearly differs significantly from what the customer claims to have received.

Many comments expressed a shared sentiment of confusion, with phrases like "What is going on here?" The complaints included missing items from the cup and a general lack of products. The swapping in of saltine crackers was particularly irksome to customers.

"Damn, they couldn't even include a Ritz cracker; they had to use store-brand saltines," lamented one commenter.

Other users are shocked that the original poster did not realize they were being fooled by an AI-generated photo.

"The photo they provided was so clearly AI; did you not see that and think, hmm, blackberries don't just float on top of stuff like that?" exclaimed one Reddit user.

The original post was later edited to update the many people invested in the developments since the story was first shared.

The update claims the customer "was blocked on all their accounts when I wrote an honest review. Just wanting to warn others about this company so they don't get duped like I did. And these were photos from THEIR PAGE of THEIR work. I did not supply them with these photos. THEY HAD IT ON THEIRS AS THEIR WORK."

Several Reddit users are now asking how much responsibility lies with the small business in this case, and how much should simply be chalked up to the old adage, "buyer beware."

A common point is that many fast food chains and restaurants also use heavily styled and enhanced photos of their food for advertising, yet it doesn't stop anyone from buying their products even when we all know the reality is far from the picture shown on the menu.

As one commenter puts it, "Do you complain at Burger King when the burger you get isn't the same as the one on the TV ad?"

Smaller businesses are increasingly relying on AI to cut costs, and even franchises like Fancy Induced Burger have admitted to using the technology to generate and enhance content. AI-generated menu items also proved a hot-button issue at the CNE in 2026.

One commenter provides their differing perspective, writing, "Whether the seller uses AI is irrelevant."

"If they don't/can't provide what they advertise, it's on them to refund or make it right. Consumers shouldn't have to analyze every photo to decide whether what's pictured is real or AI."

As the post gained views, Reddit users noticed the catering business had disabled their comments and started posting happy reviews from their customers in their stories.

When contacted for comment, Gloria Catering defended its actions to blogTO, saying that, "Regarding this particular customer, after the order was delivered and they expressed dissatisfaction, I offered to send a driver to their home, provide a full refund, and collect the order. The customer wanted the full refund while also keeping the entire order, which I did not agree to."

"Following that interaction, I received repeated messages and comments through Instagram and Facebook that I found upsetting and inappropriate. I have kept records of the communications and can provide relevant screenshots if needed."

The response from Gloria Catering contradicts some of the statements made by the original Reddit user.

"I respect every customer's right to share their experience, but I also believe it is important that a small business not be judged solely on one person's account without considering the full context and the experiences of our other customers,"says the business owner.

Gloria maintains that they prepare each order based on the customer's preferences, requests, and the details agreed upon for their event. They emphasize that their business does not guarantee that "every order will be an exact replica of a reference or inspiration photo."

Other videos of Gloria handiwork show that the caterer does indeed produce charcuterie cups that closely resemble the ones originally requested by the dissatisfied Reddit user, and they are actually quite impressive.
