A smash burger chain that's already cornered the market in one Ontario city is gearing up to open its first Toronto location this month.
Toronto has nearly as many smash burger spots as it does raccoons. Which is to say, a lot; bordering on too many. That said, the people love those paper-thin patties, and who would I be to claim there should be fewer places to get them?
If the sudden yearning for a smash burger hits, any Toronto resident should be able to find one in five minutes or less, lest they waste away or burst into flames or whatever else happens when you really want a smash burger but can't find one. That seems to be the operant thesis around the city these days, anyway.
Case in point: Smash Daddy, a smash burger chain that's huge in Ottawa, is gearing up to open its first Toronto location in a matter of weeks.
Touted by some as the "best burger in Ottawa," Smash Daddy currently boasts five locations in the nation's capital and has made temporary forays into the Toronto market in the past with a hugely successful pop-up at Farm Boy's Front and Bathurst location in August.
It was only a matter of time before the chain tried its hand at planting more permanent roots in the city and, later this month, that's exactly what they plan to do.
Smash Daddy confirms to blogTO that they're planning to open up shop at 1112 Queen St. W., which, up until recently, was home to PG Clucks, in the coming weeks. Though their exact opening date is still up in the air, a representative from the chain says that they hope to be up and running by mid- to late-September.
However loud a sizzle this burger joint makes back home in Ottawa, Smash Daddy will have its work cut out for it if it hopes to stand out from the crowd in Toronto. There's already a Burgers Priest just a few doors down, to say nothing of the many other burger joints in the surrounding area and city at large.
That said, Toronto is sort of like New York City for burger businesses: if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere, and the city's locals are always ready to drop a few bucks on a smash burger.
