If death and taxes are the two unavoidable facts of life, then drinks and tacos are the two unavoidable facts of summertime in Toronto, and Taco Fest, the city's biggest taco-centric food festival, might just be the best place to combine the two.
In 2026, the festival is extended over two separate weekends for the very first time, the first of which took place in Mississauga over the last weekend in June, before coming to Toronto this Aug. 7 through 9.
Aside from compiling dozens of the best taco vendors from Toronto and the GTA for the nibbling pleasure of its attendees, the festival's main claim to fame is the annual crowning of the best taco in Toronto, as voted on by festivalgoers during the weekend.
This year, with two separate festivals being held, vendors have double the chances to earn the distinction that went to Kensington Market's Birria Catrina in 2025. But does the restaurant that took the title home in Mississauga have what it takes to also claim the title in Toronto?
In June, the win went to Inmigrante, a Latin American restaurant in the Beaches that draws culinary inspiration from a swath of different South and Central American countries. In the case of Taco Fest, it was their Mexican quesabirria tacos that managed to beat out all other competitors.
With Taco Fest Toronto right around the corner, the question looms large: does Inmigrante have the cojones to bring home a second straight victory in 2026, or will it be overthrown by another of the 40 vendors set to appear at the festival?
The lineup features local favourites and past winners alike, including Birria Catrina, Kong's Hot Tacos, Tacos 101, Balam, Ghost Tacos and Tacos de Princessa, to name only a few, so the competition will be tight — or, since we're talking about quesabirria, juicy.
