Shuttered Toronto Italian restaurant getting replaced by something virtually identical

A Toronto Italian restaurant that weathered its fair share of hard times before closing permanently is getting replaced this summer. Don't worry, though; the usurper isn't all that different from the original.

Even though cuisines from some of the furthest reaches of the world can be found within Toronto city limits, Italian fare continues to be king. Or rather, one of a collection of kings that refuse to diminish in relevance, regardless of the city's viral food fixation du jour.

Italian restaurants come in all shapes and sizes in this city, from chic after-work hangouts (Public Gardens) to bare-bones pasta counters (Famiglia Baldassarre) to upper-crust, elegant fine dining operations (DaNico). The city's got it, and its residents are eating it up.

Perched at a prime location in the heart of the Entertainment District, Figo spent the better part of a decade enjoying the spoils of the city's Italian food fixation.

A property of Ink Entertainment, which is behind an ever-buzzy lineup of Toronto venues (Honey Chinese, Primadonna and Vinny, to name a few), the restaurant's menu was populated with easy-to-enjoy classics and inspired originals. It was an easy option, dare I say a go-to.

In 2023, though, the restaurant encountered its first bump in the road: a fire broke out in the wee hours of the morning, shuttering the restaurant for months. When Figo finally reopened, it was only for a blink, before closing permanently in early 2026.

Never kept down for long, Ink has already reached into its bag of tricks to bring business back to the bustling corner of John and Adelaide later this summer.

Fans of Figo need not be too terribly dismayed, as it appears that Bar Romy, the concept replacing the restaurant, will similarly revolve around an Italian menu.

The details about the restaurant are scant right now, but its bare-bones Instagram account boasts images of pizza, panini and pasta, so, if there's one thing we know for sure, it's that all the major bases are covered.

Bar Romy will be located at 295 Adelaide St. W.
