A new sandwich shop and bakery (that just so happens to be nestled inside the same building as a new cookie shop) is opening soon in Toronto, bringing an end to the neighbourhood's focaccia sandwich drought.
Kensington Market certainly isn't wanting for sandwich shops. Boasting the likes of Made Rite, Sleepy Pete's and Blackbird Baking, to say nothing of the slew of tortas and tacos available at the area's myriad Mexican restaurants, handhelds are not a problem in the artsy enclave.
That said, Kensington Market did lose one of its most esteemed sandwich purveyors earlier this spring when Uncle Pete's closed its doors after less than a year in business, leaving a yawning void in the shape of a fresh-baked focaccia sandwich in its wake.
You can't keep this city separated from its sandwiches for long, though, and a new sandwich shop specializing in — you guessed it! — fresh focaccia and sandwiches assembled atop it.
Now officially open Wednesday through Sunday, Tony's Focaccia lives under the same roof as the similarly recently opened Milk and Cookies, which makes total sense, because it's run by one half of the Milk and Cookies team, French-trained baker Anthony Phoumivong.
Where Milk and Cookies specializes in, well, cookies, in unexpected flavours (poutine or pickles, anyone?), Tony's takes on a more traditional approach, serving sandwiches like The Soprano, with prosciutto, provolone, balsamic arugula, and mushroom-walnut pate.
The menu also includes no-frills egg and tuna salad sandwiches, and even a vegan option with roasted veggies, mushroom-walnut pate and arugula pesto, but if you want something a little more, er, out of the box, you can opt for the Tiger: a generous helping of Tiger Tail ice cream stuffed inside a piece of rosemary focaccia.
Honestly, I kind of see the vision, but maybe I'm just craving focaccia.
You can find both Tony's Focaccia and Milk and Cookies at 283 Augusta Ave.
