L.A. cafe that hasn't even opened yet is expanding to Toronto this summer

Though many Canadians continue to abstain from travelling to the U.S., Toronto residents will soon get a taste of Los Angeles coffee culture as Kafe, a concept based in West Hollywood, prepares to make its north-of-the-border debut this summer.

Here's the catch: the original location hasn't even opened yet.

Described as a "brew and collab" coffee shop, the cafe was "built around the idea that a café can become a platform for collaboration, culture, and creative expression, not just coffee service," co-founder Bill Germanis tells blogTO.

Created in collaboration with partner and Q grader Amir Bayat, Germanis says that the idea behind Kafe is for each location to stand as a distinct space that not only embodies the collaboration between Kafe and its partners but also engenders creative collaboration within its walls.

At the West Hollywood location, which is expected to open in late spring 2026, Germanis and Bayat partnered up with Broskin Studio, a multidisciplinary creative studio, for a full integration that combines Broskin's designs on signage and special cups for a collaborative drink, with Germanis and Bayat's Kafe concept.

Each Kafe location will be identified by a unique number, with WeHo known as Kafe 001 and Toronto as Kafe 002.

When it comes to Kafe 002, the collaboration is with none other than Mount Albert's Frano Pizza & Panini — a partnership that Germanis says happened quite naturally, however unexpected it may be.

"The partnership with Frano Pizza & Panini came about very organically through a mutual friend who had heard about the KAFE concept and mentioned it to Frank and Maria," Germais explains.

"Once we connected, there was an immediate alignment in values and energy. [...]  While coffee and pizza are obviously very different products, there were surprising similarities in the mindset required behind both. [...] There was a shared understanding that great products are rarely accidental and that attention to detail at every stage matters."

The partnership between Kafe and Frano will be a deeply integrated one, rather than each business operating within a silo under one roof. Even the space itself, Germanis tells blogTO, was designed in a black-and-white colour palette, a nod to a shared love of silver-screen cinema.

"Ultimately, the goal of KAFE 002 was not to combine two businesses under one roof, but to create a singular environment shaped by the identity, history, and perspective of everyone involved in the collaboration," Germanis explains.

As time progresses, the collaborations that each location is based on will have room to grow and evolve, welcoming in other creatives to put their stamp on the space.

"Rather than relying on short-term pop-ups or one-day activations, we aim to integrate creative work into the space more naturally through installations, printed materials, merchandise, storytelling elements, and selected events over longer periods of time," Germanis explains.

"The goal is to allow the creative's work to coexist with the rhythm of the café without interrupting the ritual of coffee itself."

As for what you'll be able to eat and drink at Kafe 002, Germanis tells blogTO that the business will offer a comprehensive menu of specialty coffee, pizza, panini, pastries and wine, "in a way that feels intentional rather than excessive."

"The experience is meant to feel calm, warm, cinematic, and lived-in," he says.

Beyond the ease with which he found a partner in Frano, the decision to expand into the Toronto market was an easy one for Germanis, who was born and raised in the city.

On top of his own personal connection to the city, Germanis tells blogTO that Toronto's passion for cafe culture and its growing hospitality sector made it a no-brainer for the business's next location, but the partnership with Frano was the final piece that made the whole picture come together.

"Internally, we have developed a saying at KAFE: 'We do not choose the next location, it chooses us.' That philosophy reflects how we approach growth as a brand. Expansion is not driven purely by market opportunity or geography, but by finding the right collaborator, relationship, and story that naturally aligns with what KAFE is intended to be," he explains.

Kafe 002, to be located at 1024 Queen St. W., is still in the final stages of construction, so its exact opening date has yet to be determined, but Germanis tells blogTO it should be coming around mid-June 2026.
