Cafe that feels like you're inside an airplane just opened in Toronto

Toronto residents can now pick up their daily cup of joe at a cafe that feels exactly like being inside an airplane, because why not?

Seeing as Toronto's space travel-themed bar closed its doors just six months ago, it seems like the city has been hungry for an establishment that fills the high-flying food and beverage concept void.

The team at FlyMood, a new airplane-themed cafe in the Annex, is happy to oblige.

Listen, I'll be honest: when I think of air travel, my taste buds don't exactly start tingling. Maybe it's because I haven't treated myself to enough first-class tickets on Emirates, but using airplane and coffee in the same sentence instantly evokes the flavour of burnt Folgers in a paper cup. I can't be alone in this.

Still, FlyMood, which officially opened for business in mid-February, has eschewed the less-appetizing elements of airline travel, instead formulating a menu inspired by the concept of travel itself, be it by plane, train or automobile.

On the beverage menu, you'll find caffeinated drinks from across the globe: matcha from Japan, tiramisu lattes and espresso con panna inspired by Italy, and Turkish coffee brewed, as is tradition, in hot sand. You can even get a coconut matcha latte that comes served inside a coconut shell.

The food menu, populated by sweet treats, cakes and pastries, follows a similar model, with Middle Eastern staples like knafeh and stuffed dates served alongside berry cheesecake and Turkish baklava.

But it's the cafe's interior that really sells it. The long, narrow room is dimly lit from a domed ceiling that gives the convincing impression of a fuselage, while video screen faux "windows" play scenes from above the clouds.

In this case, though, turbulence, seat-kickers, and nimble-sized plastic cups are nowhere to be found. I think I'm maybe starting to get the appeal.

FlyMood Cafe and Lounge is located at 533 Bloor St. W.
