Only a month after his short-lived East Coast diner Bar Clams closed its doors (and his new restaurant at Hamilton's TD Coliseum opened), another Matty Matheson-associated restaurant in Toronto is closing permanently.
It's been a tough run for fans of Matty Matheson's Toronto restaurants lately, as fresh on the heels of the ill-fated Bar Clams' closure, Ca Phe Rang, the chef's Vietnamese collaboration with mentor Rang Nguyen, has also announced it will close soon.
Opening its doors in late 2021, the colourful hole-in-the-wall has been a Spadina and Queen West staple for a little over four years, holding its own among the throngs of other pho and banh-mi restaurants in the neighbourhood.
That legacy will come to an end later this month, as Ca Phe Rang will close its doors for good.
"With a heavy heart and immense gratitude, we’re sharing that Cà Phê Rang will be closing on January 24th, 2026, as our lease comes to an end and a new tenant takes over our beloved space," the caption of an Instagram post announcing the closure reads.
The heartfelt caption goes on to express the pride that the entire team feels at what they built in Ca Phe Rang, going on to thank both the customers and staff who made the restaurant's huge success possible over the years.
Luckily, the end isn't here quite yet. You've still got a couple of weeks to swing by for one last banh mi, roll or bowl of pho, and the Ca Phe Rang team insists that you do.
"Join us for a farewell meal, one last coffee, and a celebratory goodbye," the caption reads. "Chef Rang's love for sharing beautiful food is forever!!"
Still, the timing of this closure paired with that of Bar Clams raises some alarm bells. Could it be that, in pursuit of big Hollywood dreams, Matty Matheson is abandoning Toronto altogether? I wouldn't go that far just yet.
His West Queen West dining room Prime Seafood Palace remains, at least for now, alive and well, while, just a short trip outside of the city, Rizzo's House of Parm continues to serve up Italian fare.
I'd be remiss to forget his chains, Maker Pizza and Matty's Patty's, which are still as popular as ever.
So, while Ca Phe Rang will soon be a memory, there are still options for Matty Matheson fans to sample the chef's cooking in and around Toronto.
Ca Phe Rang is located at 147 Spadina Ave.
