A brand-new Italian sandwich shop that specializes in deep, fluffy and freshly-baked focaccia is about to arrive in Toronto.
Everybody has their own personal tastes when it comes to food, but if there's one thing I can say with confidence about the Toronto consumers of today, it's that they're crazy for an Italian sandwich.
Look no further than 2025's massive influx of Italian-style sandwich shops for evidence: if it involves mortadella, mozzarella or any variation of Italian bread, the people will come.
If you are one such Italian sandwich fanatic and you've already run through this year's list of must-visits, I come bearing good news: there's yet another gearing up to open its doors in the heart of downtown Toronto.
Coming soon to Queen West, Mico Italian Sandwiches is the latest venture for owner Domenico, who has operated Alliston's Da Grazia restaurant for the past decade after immigrating to Ontario from Italy in 2014.
"Domenico decided to open Mico out of his love for Italian street food, especially panini," a representative from Mico tells blogTO.
"He has been working on this idea and perfecting his recipe for years, travelling across Italy to explore, learn, and bring authentic flavours to his own creations."
Beyond serving up the same tried-and-true Italian deli staples, the representative tells blogTO, Mico will introduce the city to a style of sandwich it hasn't seen before, with a focaccia recipe entirely Domenico's own.
"Our focaccia is inspired by pizza al padellino—the classic pan-baked style of Turin, Italy. Traditionally prepared in small round pans, this method produces a soft interior with a crunchy and firm, evenly baked base. It's Italy's version of a pan-style 'deep dish,' but with its own distinct technique," they explain.
"That heritage is why we call ours Focaccia al Padellino."
Each batch of focaccia will be fermented for 72 hours before being baked fresh and loaded up with a broad selection of cured meats, preserves and produce.
While the opening date is still up in the air for now, Mico should be opening its doors near the intersection of Queen West and Bathurst in the coming weeks. On the bright side, you've got no shortage of other Italian sandwich spots in the city to fill the void while you wait.
Mico Italian Sandwiches will be located at 679 Queen St. W.
