Indian buffet in Toronto permanently closed after decades in business

A long-standing fixture of Toronto's dining since has quietly shuttered its doors.

Bombay Palace, the North Indian buffet, restaurant, and takeout spot at 71 Jarvis St., has officially shut down after over four decades in business.

Known for its hearty Thursday and Friday lunch and dinner buffets, the restaurant was a go-to spot for families craving a wide range of Indian dishes, from street food classics and rich curries to grilled meats and an array of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.

Originally founded in downtown Montreal in 1976, Bombay Palace went on to become a globally recognized name, opening a Toronto location in 1979, along with locations in cities like New York, London, Kuala Lumpur, Budapest, Beverly Hills, and Washington D.C.

Surprisingly, the closure of its downtown Toronto location came without an official announcement or farewell post. The restaurant's website has been taken down, its social media pages remain silent, and a "for lease" sign now hangs outside of the 2,700-square-foot space.

According to the listing, the fully equipped restaurant, priced at $169,900, has been on the market for 87 seats. It goes on to note that the space boasts a large seating capacity and is ready to be converted to any approved cuisine.

If you can't live without the restaurant's dishes, the good news is that you can still visit its Brampton location at 200 Advance Blvd., which has served locals since 1994.

However, for those who regularly made the pilgrimage to Jarvis Street or regularly ordered takeout from the restaurant, the abrupt closure is heartbreaking to say the least.

Bombay Palace did not respond to blogTO's multiple requests for comment on the closure.
