People in Toronto trying to gatekeep grocery store that sells food for dirt cheap

One Toronto grocery store is making waves for its dirt-cheap prices, but some locals want to keep this hidden gem, hidden.

It's no secret that groceries in Toronto (and much of the world, for that matter) are reaching all-time price highs, accelerated by the on-again-off-again threat of tariffs from the U.S. Government, but, despite it all, there are still some places where the city's residents can find food that's actually affordable.

Well, affordable by 2025 standards, that is.

While some good Samaritans are helping folks pinch their pennies by sharing affordable grocery guides or tips and tricks, others are taking to social media to share their go-to grocery stores that sell essentials for a fraction of what you might find at major chains.

For one Toronto-based TikTok user, who goes by the username @faithwone, Chinatown's Kai Wei Supermarket is one such spot, as she recently took to the app to share the bountiful produce haul she scored for just $10.

In the video, she shares that she picked up three sleeves of garlic for $2, a sizeable carrot for $0.80, a zucchini for $0.47, two packs of tomatoes for $1 each, two packs of blackberries for $1 each, a $1 pack of five cobs of corn and a $1 watermelon, which all came to a grand total of just $10.26.

Upon posting the video, throngs of local shoppers flooded the comments with words of appreciation for Faith's willingness to share her secrets and astonishment at the stark contrast between the prices you'd find at chain retailers.

"Crazy bc these EXACT brands of fruit and veg r at loblaws for 3-5x the prices," one person comments.

"Going here asap! Love this part of town," writes another.

On the other hand, though others were quick to express their worries about Kai Wei Supermarket getting too well-known.

"stop telling people!!! I'm scared it's gonna get too busy and they'll raise their prices," the top comment reads.

"GATEKEEP WHERE YOU SHOP OR THE PRICES WILL RISE," writes another viewer.

Luckily for budget-conscious shoppers in the city, Kai Wei isn't the only place where you can find great deals on produce.

Bloorcourt's Economy Fruit boasts similarly frugal pricing, alongside my personal favourite, Bloor Fruit Market, which, though its prices may be a bit higher than Kai Wei (or any of the other gatekept gems in the city), still beats a $100 trip to Loblaws any day.

Kai Wei Supermarket is located at 253 Spadina Ave.
