Budget-friendly burger product recalled across Canada

A recall has been issued for a Sobeys brand chicken product, so if you recently purchased one, you may want to check your freezer.

On Thursday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) published a notice announcing that a Sobeys brand of chicken burgers is part of a nationwide recall, which was triggered by Ontario-based company Leadbetter Foods Inc.

"Compliments brand Smashed 100 per cent Chicken Burgers recalled due to undeclared egg," reads the statement.

The affected product is sold in a box of eight and weighs 680 grams. It has the universal product code (UPC) 0 55742 58333 5, a best-before date of BB 2027-JA-06 and lot code 00099193. If you find that you have the product, do not consume, sell, serve, or distribute it.

The recall has been assigned as a class two, which means that "there is a moderate risk that consuming the food may lead to short-term or non-life-threatening health problems." If you've been affected by the recall, you can file a report with the Government of Canada.

According to the agency, eggs are one of the most common allergens in food, in addition to milk, mustard, peanuts, crustaceans and molluscs, fish, sesame seeds, soy, sulphites, tree nuts, and wheat and triticale.

"To help people with allergies and related disorders make informed choices, prepackaged food labels must identify priority allergens and gluten sources," reads the CFIA website.

Costco Canada recently recalled two types of cheese products "due to the potential presence of Listeria."

The affected products are:

• 600g Cheese Curds from Laiterie Coaticook with a best before date of Aug. 7, 2026
• 640g Cheddar Cheese Block from Laiterie Coaticook with a best before date of Oct. 22, 2026
