Mexican restaurant in buzzy Toronto neighbourhood shuts down

After a brief stint in one of the city's most busy neighbourhoods, one restaurant has shut down for good and will soon be replaced by a buzzy new concept.

There's something nice about knowing that, regardless of the fact that Toronto is already home to more restaurants than a reasonable person could even come close to trying all of, there always seems to be something fresh and new cropping up.

On the other hand, though, this comes hand-in-hand with the unfortunate truth that, in order to make room for new restaurants, older ones — and even some not-that-old — have to close down.

The latest casualty in Toronto's culinary circle of life is the Entertainment District's Casa Mezcal which, after a somewhat short-lived four-year stint on the neighbourhood's "Restaurant Row," called it quits in the early days of 2025.

Offering no explanation, or even warning, that they'd be closing down, the restaurant, known for its lively atmosphere, Mexican fare and regular dance parties, simply left behind a prime piece of real estate in one of the city's most highly-coveted entertainment areas.

It's no wonder, then, that the space at 291 King West was snatched up almost immediately.

Good news for all those heartbroken by the loss of Casa Mezcal: it's usurper, while an entirely new entity from an entirely different team, will maintain the Mexican theme.

While some of the details about the new restaurant are still under wraps, it'll soon be opening up under the name Tulum Mexican Restaurant, whose aim is to "bring the vibrant flavors, warmth, and spirit of Tulum to the heart of Toronto," a representative from the restaurant told me.

Expect vibrant, Mexican-Caribbean-inspired interiors and fresh flavours, paired with the lively atmosphere of a Tulum beach club, all without having to dust off your passport.

The restaurant is also set to house a club called Playa on the second floor, and, on the third floor, a speakeasy-style bar called Cenote.

The restaurant is still in the process of development and construction, so an exact opening date has yet to be announced, but keep your eyes peeled for the latest addition to Toronto's party strip.
