Toronto bakery that was a local favourite closing after 18 years

A bakery in Toronto that's been a staple in the neighbourhood since 2006 recently announced that they'll be closing for good.

Let's be real, South Etobicoke is home to no shortage of exemplary bakeries, including an impressive amount of stalwart institutions like the much-heralded San Remo, the 50 year-old Sweet Gallery and Baker Street.

A business doesn't need to have been around for a half-century to make a name for itself in the borough, though; it just needs to hold its own when it comes to the discerning tastes of the neighbourhood residents, and for the past 18 years, Tatsu's Bread has more than fit the bill.

The bakery was founded by master baker Tatsu Sato and his wife, Junko, creating a fusion of Western and Japanese breads, sweets and other baked goods that they sold to scores of residents and students from the nearby Humber College Campus.

While their breads are really the star of the show, their made-to-order sandwiches, danishes, scones and legendarily large almond croissant all absolutely hold their own among the favourites.

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, though, and that, too, is the case for Tatsu's, who recently took to their Instagram to announce that they'll be closing the shop permanently as of Christmas Eve.

"We started this bakery in 2006 and over these eighteen years, we have had so much wonderful support," Tatsu and Junko write in the caption of the post.

"We are truly grateful to have had our business and our life in this great community of South Etobicoke."

While the couple do not offer any explanation behind their decision to close the bakery down in the caption, they do mention that it's time for them to move on to the "next chapter," and it appears as though fans of the shop will simply have to wait and see what, exaclty, that next chapter will be.

blogTO reached out to Tatsu's Bread for more details on their decision to close, but they declined to offer additional comment, noting that they're busy whipping up fresh loaves and goodies for their regular customers in the final weeks of the bakeshop.

For fans of the bakery, you've got two weeks left to pick up all of your favourite treats before the shop closes for good on Tuesday, Dec. 24.

Tatsu's Bread is located at 3180 Lakeshore West.
