Hundreds of people lined up for opening of new Costco location in Toronto

American big-box retailer, Costco Wholesale (Costco) recently unveiled its massive new location in Toronto's Rexdale neighborhood on Thursday.

Similar to other high-profile openings in the city, hundreds of people showed up at the new membership-only facility on opening day, located at 2260 Islington Ave. just north of Highway 401.

The nearly 165,000-square-foot store carries an extensive selection of food offerings and a large variety of specialty departments, such as an on-site bakery, fresh meat, produce area, food court, and rotisserie chicken section.

The massive warehouse also includes an optical centre with an on-site independent optometrist, a hearing aid centre, five tire centre bays, pharmacy, and a gas station with 24 pumps.

A TikTok uploaded on the facility's opening date shows a crowd of shoppers congregated near the entrance of the store.

While the multinational corporation already operates multiple stores across the GTA, it seems like shoppers were eager to take advantage of the warehouse's deals in promotion of its opening week, including savings on flat-screen TVs, office chairs, and cookware sets.

"Yes I'm going to wait it out. My friends went [and] said there was no way you could push a cart around," one person wrote.

"Who has this much time? It's very perplexing that anyone would line up for a store that is open country-wide. Same stuff in every store," another comment reads.

"It's a new location people. Let folks just enjoy not having to travel forever to get to a Costco," one person said in response to the negative comments.

Costco Wholesale currently operates 861 warehouses worldwide, with 107 warehouses across Canada and 21 locations in the GTA.
