Ontario city is giving away free trees this week

Residents of Hamilton, Ont., can now score a free native tree for their property — and the City will even send a professional to plant it for you.

Hamilton's new Backyard Tree Planting Pilot Program will provide select residents with a free professionally planted native tree as part of the City's broader efforts to expand the local tree canopy.

The partnership between the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Naturalists' Club will grant 50 properties in Hamilton's Bartonville neighbourhood (Ward 4) new trees this year, which local officials state will "strengthen biodiversity and support healthier, more resilient neighbourhoods."

Eight different native tree species are available for planting, giving property owners plenty of selection to help green their yards.

The free tree giveaway is limited to just 50 properties, and with limited space, locals are urged to apply before applications close on Aug. 31.
