Toronto's next major transit hub just crossed a huge milestone

An impressive new transit hub is now taking shape at the southern end of the future Ontario Line subway, and Toronto commuters will be getting up close and personal with this futuristic train station long before it wraps up construction in the 2030s.

Exhibition Station will serve as the southern terminus of the new 15.6-kilometre Ontario Line, set to become a multimodal hub serving both GO and Ontario Line trains with quick connections to the TTC's 511 Bathurst and 509 Harbourfront streetcars.

Much of the line's work is happening deep underground away from the prying eyes of passersby, though GO train passengers and locals crossing the temporary footbridge at the Exhibition Station site are now getting a glimpse of the first permanent above-ground structures for a major station along the route.

Steel structural elements are now visible along the rail corridor, representing the first sections of the vast domed superstructure that will house the station's shared GO and Ontario Line concourse.

While it doesn't look particularly imposing just yet, this structure will eventually grow to span the entire rail corridor — meaning trains will pass through the new rail hub as it takes shape.

Renderings of the finished product offer more insight into how the structural steel now taking shape will plug into the completed building.

This link between GO and the TTC's subway network will provide significant relief to overcrowded conditions at Union Station.

The new station is expected to siphon 14,000 commuters away from Union Station during the rush hour peak, reducing congestion at the city's main rail hub by a modest 14 per cent.

The station will also offer easy connections from the GO and subway networks onto the TTC's local streetcar network, with the new rail hub situated just steps from the 511 Bathurst and 509 Harbourfront streetcar loop near Exhibition Place.
