Thousands of cyclists will shut down two Toronto highways this weekend

Thousands of bike riders will take over two major Toronto highways this weekend as the Mattamy Homes Bike for Brain Health returns to the city.

The fifth annual fundraiser in support of Baycrest will see riders travel along car-free portions of the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway on Sunday, May 31, raising funds for Alzheimer's and dementia research, early detection, and new treatments.

Recognized as Canada's largest one-day cycling event, the fundraiser attracts over 10,000 participants each year, with some riders tackling routes as long as 90 kilometres.

This year's event will operate out of a new home base at the Aga Khan Museum in North York, near Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue East.

Registration is still open, and riders under the age of 15 can sign up for just $25, while those 16 and older pay a $75 fee.

To accommodate the event, several roads will close beginning 2 a.m. on Sunday, May 31, including:

  • Gardiner Expressway, both directions from South Kingsway to the DVP
  • DVP, both directions from Lake Shore Boulevard to Highway 401
  • Ramps at Rees Street, Spadina Avenue, Jameson Avenue, and South Kingsway

All roads are expected to reopen by 4 p.m., according to organizers.

If you're planning on driving in and around the city on Sunday, expect significant delays and use alternative routes when possible.
