toronto transit road closures

It will be a total nightmare getting around Toronto this weekend

Pack your patience if you've got plans in Toronto this weekend, as several transit-related shutdowns and road closures are scheduled this weekend.

With a Toronto Tempo game, thousands of cyclists pedalling along a major highway and Bruno Mars wrapping up his five-night stint at Rogers Stadium, the city's streets are going to be packed to say the least.

If you rely on public transit to get around, you may come across a few hiccups, so brace yourself.

Line 2 Bloor-Danforth

A five-kilometre stretch of Line 2 Bloor-Danforth between Jane and Ossington stations will be shut down for the whole weekend on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31. Shuttle buses will operate instead. The transit agency says this is due to "planned track work" ahead of the major influx of visitors heading to Toronto for the FIFA World Cup in June.

Runnymede, High Park, Lansdowne and Dufferin stations will be fully closed to commuters, while other stations affected by the closure will remain open for passengers to connect with surface routes and purchase/reload fares.

There will also be several GO Transit closures this weekend, which are bound to cause headaches for commuters.

Barrie Line

Metrolinx plans to shut down service on the entire Barrie GO Line for the whole weekend of Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31. 101 kilometres of track and 11 stations will be out of service, including Downsview GO, which will impact commuters headed to Rogers Stadium for the final Bruce Mars shows in Toronto.

Train service will be replaced by GO buses between Allandale Waterfront GO and Highway 407 Bus Terminal. Commuters travelling south of Highway 407 can connect with the TTC to continue their trips if they need to get to Union Station.

Lakeshore West Line

Another line impacted this week includes a 45-kilometre stretch of the Lakeshore West Line, between Aldershot and Mimico. Seven stations will be out of service due to ongoing GO expansion work, while GO buses will service West Harbour, Aldershot, Burlington, Oakville, and Clarkson and Bramalea GO, where customers can continue east via the Kitchener line to get to Union Station.

Thousands of bike riders will take over two major Toronto highways this weekend so those looking to drive in or out of the city may hit a few snags.

Gardiner Expressway

The Gardiner Expressway will be closed in both directions from South Kingsway to the Don Valley Parkway on Sunday, May 31, between  2 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is to accommodate the annual Mattamy Homes Bike for Brain Health fundraiser for dementia research.

Delays are expected on parallel routes such as Lake Shore Boulevard, so drivers might want to give themselves extra time getting around.

Don Valley Parkway

The DVP will also be closed on Sunday, May 31, between 2 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the Bike for Brain Health fundraiser. Both directions from Lake Shore Boulevard to Highway 401 and ramps at Rees Street, Spadina Avenue, Jameson Avenue, and South Kingsway will be shut down as the highway goes car-free for the 10,000 expected cyclists.

Downtown roads

The annual We Walk UHNited fundraising event will take place on Saturday, May 30 and up to 5 kilometres of downtown roads will be shut down to accommodate the walk.

Toronto Police say the following road closures will be closed between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.:

  • Dundas Street West will be closed from Bay Street to Bathurst Street
  • St. Patrick Street will be closed from Dundas Street West to Elm Street
  • Elm Street will be closed from Murray Street to McCaul Street
  • McCaul Street will be closed from Baldwin Street to Dundas Street West

And Elizabeth Street will be closed from College Street to Dundas Street West starting at 5 a.m., but will reopen at 1 p.m.

With the Toronto Tempo game taking place Saturday afternoon at Coca-Cola Coliseum, and two huge concerts happening at Scotiabank Arena and Rogers Centre on Sunday night, it's safe to assume crowds will amass downtown near Union Station during those times. Give yourself plenty of time to get around, Toronto!
