Tina Yazdani speaks out on 'devastating' day after abrupt CityNews firing

Respected Toronto journalist Tina Yazdani finally breaks her silence two weeks after she was abruptly axed by CityNews.

The Queen's Park reporter worked at the Rogers-owned media outlet for nearly eight years before she announced she was let go on April 13. Blowback was immediate as many Toronto residents expressed frustration and concern regarding a broader issue tied to press freedom and political accountability.

Now, Yazdani is speaking out and thanking the community for the outpour of support.

"I want to say thank you so much for all of the support and the messages," she says. "It has meant so much to me knowing how much my journalism and my work has resonated."

These messages, Yazdani goes on to say, have helped her get through "a very difficult few weeks."

The journalist goes on to say she loved her job and that her ousting came as a complete shock. Yazdani also shares that she wanted to address the matter privately with the mega media corporation. Because that didn't happen for the seasoned professional, Yazdani will now "take formal steps to address the situation."

"The way that my employment ended was unfair," she says. "I stand by all of the journalism that I did, I stand by all of my work – I am proud of the work I did. I am a strong believer in holding power to account and asking the tough questions."

The journalist also provides followers with an update on her next career move.

Yazdani announces she is going to take on a new role as Queen's Park reporter for The Trillium, a political outlet that she says has "set the bar high." Her new position starts Monday, May 4.
