Ontario gets in on the 'what were you like in the '90s' trend
If you've spent any time on TikTok or Instagram Reels this past month, you've probably heard the hit song, "Iris" by The Goo Goo Dolls more than usual, as users share sentimental glimpses of their lives in the '90s.
The trend typically starts with a present-day video with text that reads, "Mom/Dad, what were you like in the '90s?" before cutting to a slideshow of throwback photos and videos.
Plenty of celebrities have hopped on the trend, including Drew Barrymore, Kristin Davis, Alicia Silverstone, Reese Witherspoon, Courteney Cox, Kevin Bacon, and Usher.
Over the past few weeks, Ontario has also been getting in on the trend, with cities and landmarks posting their own versions and offering a nostalgic snapshot of how familiar places looked three decades ago.
The City of Mississauga joined in by sharing throwback images of longtime former mayor Hazel McCallion, along with photos of the city's older transit buses and aerial views of Square One Shopping Centre.
The Bentway also highlighted how the Gardiner Expressway looked throughout the '90s, and how the public space underneath has transformed to now offer community and artistic programming.
Toronto's Mayor also participated in the trend, sharing personal photos from the decade alongside her late husband, Jack Layton. The photos date back to Olivia Chow's early political career, when she was first elected as city councillor for Trinity—Spadina in 1992.
The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) posted several archival images showing both the exterior and interior of the museum in the 1990s.
The Harbourfront Centre also shared plenty of photos capturing the lively energy of waterfront events before the area transformed.
Even the Toronto Public Library joined in, posting vintage footage of the Toronto Reference Library.
