With the highly-anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 less than four months away now, millions of fans from around the world are already in the midst of planning their trips to Toronto, and if you're already lucky enough to call the city home, you could earn some serious cash by renting out your place during the tournament.
Last week, Airbnb officially launched its biggest host incentive program ever, inviting residents in the 16 World Cup host cities across North America, including in Toronto, to open up their homes to international soccer fans.
Under the program, new hosts who list their entire home on Airbnb and welcome their first guests by July 31, 2026, are eligible to receive approximately $1,000 CAD (or $750 USD).
To qualify, you also need to register your place as a short-term rental with the City of Toronto.
According to the online marketplace, demand for stays on the platform during the World Cup has surged, with searches for accommodations in host cities increasing by "an average of 80 per cent compared to the same period last year."
A Deloitte study commissioned by Airbnb also estimates that Toronto residents could earn roughly $2,700 CAD on average by renting out their space on the platform during the tournament.
Overall, roughly 146,000 tourists requiring accommodations are expected to pour into Toronto and nearby areas this June, including about 28,000 Airbnb guests, who are anticipated to contribute 187,000 guest nights.
Deloitte estimates that total host earnings in Toronto during the tournament will reach $13 million USD (around $17,800,00 CAD), with average earnings per host of approximately $2,000 USD, which works out to roughly $173 USD per night.
The study notes that earnings could be particularly impactful for women in Toronto, who represent just over half (57 per cent) of Airbnb hosts across Canada, and seniors, who represent 16 per cent of all hosts.
Toronto is set to host six FIFA World Cup 2026 games at BMO Field on June 12, 17, 20, 23, 26, and July 2.
