Almost 9 km of TTC subway will shut down for this entire weekend

TTC subway closures this weekend will grind an almost nine-kilometre stretch of Line 1 to a halt, as the transit agency resumes the regular planned disruptions that were mercifully paused in June and July to paint a pretty picture for tourists during Toronto's hosting role in the FIFA World Cup.

The TTC has announced that there will be no service on the Line 1 Yonge-University route between Sheppard West and St Clair West stations for the entire weekend of Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16.

Service will shut down early along this 8.7-kilometre stretch on Friday, August 14 at 11:59 p.m., and trains will not resume serving this stretch until the start of service on the morning of Monday, August 17.

Passengers relying on this significant stretch of track will be herded onto shuttle buses during the planned outage, while TTC staff will be on hand to guide passengers.

Among the stations affected by the closure, only Glencairn Station will be closed, along with the Ranee Avenue entrance at Yorkdale Station. All other stations will remain open for passengers to purchase fares and connect with TTC surface routes.

While it will undoubtedly cause some headaches for commuters, the TTC has clearly put some thought into the timing of this outage — coming just after the conclusion of a string of concerts at Rogers Stadium, which is served by stations affected by the outage, and just one day after the scheduled Aug. 14 National Bank Open final match near Pioneer Village Station, situated just north of the planned closure.
