It's going to be a nightmare getting around Toronto this weekend

With the end of summer rapidly approaching, Toronto is squeezing in every last outdoor festival and event it can, meaning that getting around the city over the next few days might take a bit longer than you'd expect.

Whether you're joining thousands of others at the CNE, exploring local art in Yorkville, or heading to a local concert, expect some significant road closures, packed transit routes, and diversions.

Between Friday, Aug. 22 and Sunday, Aug. 21, several road restrictions and traffic management measures will be coming into effect for events, filming and critical construction.

From 5 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 to 2 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, Yonge Street will be closed between Dundas and Richmond Streets for the Sankofa Day event, a full-day celebration of Afro-Caribbean culture and local diversity, as well as the official opening of the new Sankofa Square.

From 7 a.m. on Friday, August 22 to 9 a.m. on Sunday, August 24, Yorkville Avenue will also be closed between Hazelton Avenue and Bellair Street for the Yorkville Murals Festival, which will feature large-scale murals, inflatable art, immersive installations, live painting, art talks, dance battles, pop-up shops, music and a block party.

The Toronto Korean Festival is also taking place this weekend at Mel Lastman Square, featuring energetic dance and singing competitions and more. To make space for the event, southbound Yonge Street will be reduced to two lanes at Mel Lastman Square from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24.

Meanwhile, the legendary Manchester band, Oasis, will be making a historic two-show stop at Rogers Stadium in Toronto this week, marking the first time Liam and Noel Gallagher have shared a stage since their split in 2009.

As a result, the westbound curb lane on Wilson Avenue between Transit Road and Dufferin Street will be restricted to vehicles picking up or dropping off passengers or making northbound turns onto Dufferin Street on both Sunday and Monday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. From 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on both days, Wilson Avenue will also be closed between Transit Road and Dufferin Street, as well as Sheppard Avenue between Keele Street and William R. Allen Road.

Aside from all the lively festivals and concerts, North America's third-largest pop culture event, FAN EXPO Canada, will be taking over Toronto from Thursday, Aug. 21 to Sunday, Aug. 24. The celebration of comics, sci-fi, horror, anime and gaming is set to welcome celebrity guests like Michael J. Fox, Ewan McGregor, Hailee Steinfeld, and Mike Tyson.

So, until 11 p.m. on Sunday, there will be several road restrictions in place for the event at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Front Street will be reduced to one eastbound lane between John and Lower Simcoe Streets, Lower Simcoe Street will be reduced to one southbound lane between Front Street and Bremner Boulevard, and Bremner Boulevard will be reduced to one westbound lane between Lower Simcoe Street and Roundhouse Park.

If you're heading down to the CNE (or even going anywhere near it) this weekend, make sure to set aside lots of extra time for travel, as Dufferin Street/British Columbia Road will be closed between Springhurst Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard West from 5 a.m. on Saturday to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. Plus, the annual event is known for creating bottlenecks in the area, attracting some 1.5 million attendees each year.

Despite all the road closures, the City notes that festivals and events generate significant economic and cultural benefits for Toronto.

If you're planning on attending the above events or any others taking place in the city — or simply travelling in these areas — make sure to plan your route in advance, and consider taking public transit or other travel methods such as walking or cycling.

A full list of all road closures can be found on the City's website.
