Toronto getting a new park that will just be torn up and replaced by another park

A vast site that could soon be home to three of Toronto's tallest buildings is getting a new park in advance of the spring thaw. Just don't get too attached to this new public space, as it will only be levelled in the years to come to make way for...wait...another park?

Toronto's newest park is being prepped for the warmer months ahead, though this new green space is just a temporary measure ahead of a permanent replacement that will be conveyed to the City in the future.

Crews have been working away at the site of a former LCBO branch that was attached to the provincial liquor retail's former headquarters on Queens Quay East — with buildings since cleared and reduced to facades along the northern half of the site — to create a new temporary park featuring grass, trees, and rolling hills.

The site between Freeland and Cooper streets is destined to become the central park for Menkes' massive Sugar Wharf community, a complex already home to two completed condo towers and an office building that houses the new LCBO headquarters.

But it will be the next phase of the community, just north of the park site, that really shakes up views of the Toronto skyline, with towers rising 85, 78, and 70 storeys that would all rank among the top ten tallest in the city if completed today.

The presence of these massive skyscrapers, along with similarly tall developments flanking to the east and west, would give this public space a distinctly urban feel.

However, the public will have to wait a little while longer for the temporary park to open and longer still for its permanent replacement.

Public consultations for the design of a permanent park on this site are expected to take place this year, and a design competition will select the preferred option from a pool of candidates.
