line 6 finch speed

We raced TTC's Line 6 on a bus and it was so slow we had time to stop for a snack

Toronto's newest transit line debuted on Dec. 7 to brutally bad reviews, and it seems that even a few weeks into service, the TTC has not ironed out the many kinks plaguing the nascent Line 6 Finch West.

The line's early struggles have continued into late December, and its slower-than-promised service was even underscored by a local outrunning the 18-stop light rail line on foot.

We set out to see how bad service really is on the much-touted and later wildly-criticized Line 6 compared to alternative transit options, and the results were shocking to say the least.

If you were clicking on this article to see a transit dumpster fire play out before your eyes, reader, you are in for a real treat today.

Two riders departed Finch West Station on a Wednesday morning bound for Humber College. One rode the newly-opened LRT on its full 10.3-kilometre westbound run, while another relied on a combination of two buses — routes 41 and 996 — to travel around the seemingly cursed LRT.

And while you'd think you'd be safe in assuming that the LRT, with its more direct route and slick new trains, would have easily won the race, you would be wrong.

In fact, it wasn't even close.

Line 6 lived up to its reputation in short order with immediate delays, and even incorrectly displayed station names.

Not only did a combination of buses covering a greater distance easily beat the LRT to Humber College, but the discrepancy in travel times was so pronounced that it allowed our intrepid bus passenger more than enough time to line up amid throngs of students to refuel with a banana muffin.

Check out the entire saga of transit woes in this video.

Would you still travel on the Line 6 Finch West amid its continued speed and reliability struggles?
