Toronto is getting a new Holocaust Museum

A new Holocaust Museum will be opening in Toronto, and it should be ready for visitors in 2023.

Being created by the UJA Federation's Neuberger Holocaust Centre, it's supposed to be a state-of-the-art facility for Holocaust education that will touch on themes like contemporary antisemitism, world events and present day Canadian life.

The announcement of the museum opening came along with the news that a $12 million donation had been contributed to making the project happen by the Azrieli Foundation.

The centre will be moving into its new museum location in the Sheff Family Building on UJA's Sherman Campus, has been known as the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre for the past decade, and was originally founded by Holocaust survivors 35 years ago.

The space should be designed intentionally to allow for the expansion of programs and experiences to engage a wider audience, and promises to be technologically advanced.

"Holocaust education is changing, and we are taking bold action to meet twenty-first century challenges, using twenty-first century tools," says Naomi Azrieli, CEO of the Azrieli Foundation.

The revitalized museum is intended to serve as an immersive educational experience for students as well as a memorial space for the descendants of survivors.

"In these troubling times of growing antisemitism, education has become paramount in combatting this hatred, and the Toronto Holocaust Museum is poised to be at the forefront of the battle against misinformation," says Glennie Lindenberg, chair of the renewal project's council.
