car crash eaton centre

A car somehow crashed into the Toronto Eaton Centre

A driver took a slight detour directly into an exterior wall of the CF Toronto Eaton Centre this weekend, and let's just say it didn't work out.

A video was posted to multiple social media platforms on Monday, showing the aftermath of a crash into an area next to the mall's parking garage entrance at the intersection of Yonge and Shuter.

In the clip, a tow truck can be seen extracting a smashed-up black Honda CRV SUV, revealing a gaping hole in the mall exterior. No information is currently available on the condition of the driver.

There has been a range of reactions to the video, though unfortunately, practically every comment on the original Instagram post, and several more on the reposted X version, make prejudiced assumptions about the driver's nationality.

However, a few commenters took the high road and cracked jokes about the mall's lack of drive-thru businesses.

Another X user shifted the blame away from the driver and called out the design of the parking entrance and intersection it empties out into.

This marks just the latest incident of cars crashing into malls and retail plazas in Toronto and the surrounding region in 2023.

Back in February, a stolen car was driven through a Vaughan shopping centre in a smash-and-grab heist. Multiple cars plowed through businesses in August, including an incident where a driver barrelled into a Mississauga strip mall dollar store, destroying the retail storefront.
