An upcoming GO station in Ontario's Niagara Region just took another step toward becoming a reality.
The Ontario government announced on Thursday that it has awarded a contract to Kenaidan Murphy Joint Venture for major construction on the new Grimsby GO station.
The transit hub, which is anticipated to be completed in the second half of 2027, is expected to cut travel times to the nearest GO station by up to 30 minutes and increase GO service along the Lakeshore West line.
"Grimsby GO will be a game changer for Niagara, bringing fast, reliable GO service closer to home, saving commuters valuable time and unlocking increased service along the Lakeshore West line," said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation.
"We're building the transportation infrastructure Ontario needs to support growing communities, create good-paying jobs and build a stronger, more competitive economy."
So far, the province has already prepared for construction of the station by removing trees and vegetation and announcing a standardized design in an effort to speed up construction and drive down costs. Work currently includes site grading, which will be followed by excavation and ultimately platform foundation construction.
The forthcoming transit hub will feature one rail platform, a five-bay bus loop, over 200 parking spaces, designated passenger pick-up and drop-off zones, bicycle parking, and heated shelters.
Grimsby GO will be the first station on the network built using the province's standardized station design, which aims to speed up the project's timeline.
